Tall Habits Die Hard

Once upon a time, I was altering a wrap-around skirt (that stopped significantly short of wrapping around all the way) for a character named Albel Nox from Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. What I had thought was the proper mid-calf length grazed the floor when I pinned it on.

I’m 5’2”. The problem with consistently cosplaying  tall characters is that when I alter or draft patterns, I tend to subconsciously draft what looks right for that character, not me. What looks like a decent guesstimate of shirt length to me at first glance is actually closer to a church-appropriate shirt dress.

But when I was cutting out the pattern pieces for Grell’s shirt this evening (and Grell’s downright short for my record, at 5’8”) it was so long on me that even I noticed it right away!

About greyrondo

My name is greyrondo. I've been a cosplayer since Fall 2006, and I've noticed that the best conversations I have with cosplayers usually involve the question, 'so how DID you do that?' So after studying costuming and making a closet's worth of costumes, that's what I'd like to help answer. Drop in and stay awhile whether you're a cosplayer or just a curious spectator; one of my musings is bound to be what you're looking for. If you have a question or something to say, leave a comment or contact me! I don't bite, I promise. View all posts by greyrondo
